Create 2012

I am excited to report that I was able to attend Create Mixed Media Art Retreat in Chicago for the second year in a row. This year I had an opportunity to attend two workshops.  I chose to explore Sue Pelletier’s  “The Painted Quilt” and a workshop by Cathy Taylor called “Ink A Licious” using Ranger Adorondack inks on yupo paper. It is always wonderful to try something new and I look forward to exploring these techniques and materials more in the coming year in my own art and in my work as an art therapist. My favorite creation is the journal cover (above) that I made out of unstretched canvas incorporating a cherished letter from a very special person in my life from 1994. I plan for it to be my creative renewal art journal for the year bound with my favorite hot press watercolor paper. This next piece I wasn’t so sure about. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to make a small version using some of the new techniques with this little canvas courtesy of Sue, my generous and vivacious artist instructor.  I could barely stand the car ride home knowing it was in my possession unfinished and the colors left so muted. A family member snapped it up and put it on her wall before I could get my hands on it and make it more vivid. The lesson here is that not everyone loves a painting to smack them in the face with color like I do.titled it ” Someone  Loves You”.

My cure for the muted experiment above was certainly these vivid inks. They offer quick spontaneous creations that are one of a kind and always striking. This one I call Dancing Flowers.
